The 2022 follow-up to Tony Scott's "Top Gun" (1986) earned a 96% on Rotten Tomatoes a month after its theatrical debut and became the 50th film in history to earn more than $1 billion at the box office globally.

Its popularity can be due to a variety of elements, including a compelling storyline, well-rounded character development, a well-balanced romantic subplot, and most importantly, stunning special effects and cinematography.

"Top Gun" earned almost $440 million in today's currency, making it the highest-grossing film in its year of release.

Action movie "Top Gun" had a novel plot twist. There were no antagonists, and Tom Cruise's portrayal of Lt. Pete "Maverick" Mitchell's experiences at TOPGUN training was the main point of interest.

The plot of "Top Gun: Maverick" is straightforward and condensed, and it also features a linear heist subplot. The simplicity allows characters to stand out and maintains the audience's interest.

The original, while its ground-breaking action sequences and flawless look, lagged behind in terms of its characters and their interplay. The only dynamic, complete character in the entire cast was Maverick.

On the other hand, all of the characters in "Top Gun: Maverick" are able to shine, in part due to the plot's simplicity and in part due to the strong chemistry the actors and characters share.

Despite being an important part of the story, "Top Gunromance "'s was only moderately sincere. Cruise's love affair was by far overshadowed by his performing and persona.

But there's a reason it's a classic: at the time, the stunts and effects were mind-blowing for the realism and quality of the action, using little to no CGI. The movie had a gratifying, upbeat ending, even though the action was only there for the first and last 20 minutes.

Similar to "Top Gun," "Top Gun: Maverick" contains a limited number of CGI action scenes, but unlike "Top Gun," the photography is stunning throughout.

When comparing "Top Gun" and its follow-up, "Top Gun: Maverick," the later accomplishes all of the former's goals more effectively.
